The following sample questions are also available in two other formats:

Non-Verbal Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #1 – Figure Classification

The Figure Classification questions show three pictures that share a connection or a characteristic. Choose the answer that shares the same connection/characteristic from the answer choices.

Free CAT4 Level B Sample Question - Figure Classification

The correct answer is 2.

The pattern in the three original figures is: The total number of sides of the component shapes is always equal (11), and the black shape has the most number of sides.

Option 1 is wrong, as it does not have a black shape.

Option 3 is wrong, as the total number of sides is 10, not 11.

Option 4 is wrong, as the total number of sides is 8 (7 the arrow & 1 the circle).

Option 5 is wrong, as the total number of sides is 13, and the black shape has the least number of sides of the two.

Therefore, the correct answer is 2, as it contains 8 + 3 = 11 sides, and the black shape has the most number of sides (8).

Question #2 – Figure Classification

Free CAT4 Year 5 Sample Question - Figure Classification

The correct answer is 3.

In this question, we can see that:
All three figures are comprised of a purple shape and a white shape.
The white shapes are in the middle of the corresponding purple shapes.
Every purple shape has two sides less than the corresponding white shape in the middle.

We can see that in the 3rd answer choice, the purple shape has six sides, while the corresponding white shape in the middle has eight sides. This means that the shape in the middle has two sides more than the shape surrounding it.

Therefore, the 3rd answer choice is the correct answer.

Question #3 – Figure Matrices

Figure Matrix questions are either 2×2 or 3×3 matrices comprised of different pictures. In each row and/or column the pictures change the same way or follow the same rule. Choose an answer that goes in the empty box in the matrix following the same rule.

Free CAT4 Level B Practice Question - Figure Matrices

The correct answer is 4.

There are three patterns in this question.

1- The grey quarter of the circle shifts by one position anticlockwise when moving from left to right in a row.

2- The black arrow shifts by one position clockwise when moving from left to right in a row.

3- The orientation of the black arrow changes by making one-quarter a rotation clockwise when moving from left to right in a row.

The fourth one is the only choice that meets all these three conditions when considering the shape on the left of the question mark.

Figure Classification and Matrices questions can be particularly challenging, especially under time pressure.

Our complete practice package offers over 100 such questions, providing your child with plenty of opportunities to practice and improve.

Verbal Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #4 – Verbal Classification

Each question provides three words that are alike in some way. Decide how they are alike, and choose the word that belongs in the same group as the first three words.

leaves | frogs | kiwi

A. grass
B. flowers
C. soil
D. vegetation
E. garden

The correct answer is (A) – grass.

Leaves, frogs, and kiwis are all green. Grass is also green.

Question #5 – Verbal Analogies

The first pair of words go together in a certain way. Choose the word that goes together with the third word similarly.

frown: sadness :: laughter :

A. noise
B. celebrate
C. joy
D. smile
E. enjoy

The correct answer is (C) – joy.

A frown is a physical expression of sadness. Laughter is a physical expression of joy.

Quantitative Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #6 – Number Analogies

Each question provides two pairs of numbers with a certain mathematical connection and another number that shares that connection with one of the answer choices. Find the missing number for the third pair.

[24 → 2] [60 → 5] [84 → ?]

A. 7
B. 9
C. 12
D. 16
E. 24

The answer is (A) – 7.

Look for the pattern in the first series of numbers. We get from 24 to 2 by subtracting 22 or dividing by 12 (the possible pattern is -22 or ÷12).

We get from 60 to 5 by dividing by 12 (÷12) or by subtracting 55 (-55). Since there must be the same pattern in both pairs, it is clear that the correct pattern, in this case, is (÷12).

The next series of numbers should follow the same pattern, meaning that the rule between 84 and ? should be ÷12 as well: 84 ÷ 12 = 7, meaning that the correct answer will be 7.

Many students find Number Analogies questions tricky and confusing

The best way to tackle this challenge is through practice. The more your child practices, the quicker they’ll recognize patterns and solve these questions accurately.

Question #7 – Number Series

Each question provides a series of numbers with a rule. Use the rule to determine which number will come next in the series.

3 9 10 16 17 23 24 ?

A. 1
B. 6
C. 25
D. 29
E. 30

The correct answer is (E) – 30.

In this series, the pattern is as follows: first, 6 is added. Then 1 is added, then 6 again, then 1, and so on.

The pattern is +6, +1, +6, +1, …

The last two numbers in the series are 23 and 24, where 24 is larger than 23 by 1, so the next number in the series should be larger than 24 by 6.

24 + 6 = 30

Therefore, 30 is the correct answer.

Spatial Reasoning Sample Questions

Question #8 – Figure Analysis

Each question shows a paper folded several times and then punched with holes. The answer choices contain unfolded papers with punched-in holes. You need to determine which of the answer choices is the final product of the unfolded punched-in paper.

Free CAT4 Year 5 Sample Question - Figure Analysis

The correct answer is 5.

First, the square was folded in half from the top to the bottom.

Then, three holes are punched on the lower half-figure remaining after the folding process: one near the left side at middle height, the other at the bottom side at its middle length, and the third, at the top right corner of the half-figure, near the crease.

When the figure is unfolded, there will be six holes in total because each hole is punched on two different layers. The holes are mirrored according to the horizontal crease.

In this way, the central-left hole of the bottom half figure is mirrored at the central-left hole of the upper half figure;

the bottom-middle hole is mirrored to the top-middle hole, and the right hole slightly below the crease will be mirrored to the right hole slightly above the crease.

The correct answer is, therefore, 5.

Question #9 – Figure Analysis

Free CAT4 Level B Practice Question - Figure Analysis

The correct answer is 2.

First, the square was folded in half, then in two other halves, i.e. in quarters, first from top to bottom, then from left to right.

Then, two holes are punched into the figure remaining after the double folding process (the bottom-right quarter): one arrow pointing up is punched near the left crease, and the other is a circular hole near the middle of the right side.

When the figure is unfolded, there will be eight holes in total (2 holes x 4 layers = 8 holes) because each hole is punched on four different layers.

The holes are mirrored according to the horizontal and vertical crease, they will appear in the following way: two adjacent arrows near the middle of the lower side pointing up;

Two other adjacent arrows near the middle of the upper side pointing down, and four circular holes near the lateral sides at the same distance from the horizontal crease and the horizontal sides.

Question #10 – Figure Recognition

Choose the answer choice that contains the given shape. The shape must keep its size and orientation.

Free CAT4 Year 5 Practice Question - Figure Recognition

The correct answer is 3.

The original figure is a kind of hinge or a square with another trapezoid-like shape that widens above. You must be careful to understand which option also fits this shape’s orientation.

Do not get confused by the extra shapes mixed with the correct one.

Thus, from a careful look, it is clear that the only figure in the options that fits the above description is the 3rd one.

Question #11 – Figure Recognition

Free CAT4 Level B Practice Question - Figure Recognition

The correct answer is 2.

The original figure is a kind of pentagon (a figure with 5 sides) where the bottom side is horizontal and a corner is on top of the figure. You must be careful to understand which option fits the orientation and the size of this shape as well when choosing the option.

Thus, from a careful look, it is clear that the only figure in the options that fits the above description is the 2nd one; just it has an extra line in it.
