The following CAT4 Level D sample questions are also available in two other formats:

Part 1

Question #1 – Figure Classification

The Figure Classification questions show three pictures that share a connection or a characteristic. Choose the answer that shares the same connection/characteristic from the answer choices.

CAT4 Level D Practice Question - Figure Classification

The correct answer is 2.

In this question you can see that:
– All figures include a black outer shape and three white inner smaller shapes.
– In all figures, the outer shape has straight sides and sharp corners.
– In all figures, there are three inner shapes; two of them have straight sides and sharp corners, and one is a full circle.

Answer choice 2 has an outer shape with straight sides and sharp corners, and its inner shapes consist of two shapes that have straight sides and sharp corners and one full circle. Therefore, it is the correct answer.

Answer choices 1 and 3 can be eliminated immediately since their outer shape is a circle and pie.
Answer choice 4 has two inner circles with one black filled while all the figures on top consist of only one circle. Therefore, you can eliminate this answer as well.

Now you are left with answers 2 and 5, and you can see that there are two circles in choice 5, while all three figures above contain only one circle.
Therefore, you can also eliminate answer 5, and you are left with answer 2 as a correct choice.

Question #2 – Figure Classification

The correct answer is 4.

In the pictures above there is a trapezoid with three circles above it. The circles’ patterns (or colors) correspond to the segments of the trapezoid below it which are patterned (or colored) in the same way. In addition, every color or pattern repeats itself only once in each trapezoid segment.

Answer 4 is correct, as it is the only answer that matches the pattern. It has circles patterned in the same way as the segments below them, and all the patterns are different from one another.

In answers 1, 2, 3, and 5 the pattern of the circles does not match the segments below them, and in answers 3 and 5 there are two segments with the same pattern (white color).

Question #3 – Figure Matrices

Figure Matrix questions are either 2×2 or 3×3 matrices comprised of different pictures. In each row and/or column the pictures change the same way or follow the same rule. Choose an answer that goes in the empty box in the matrix following the same rule.

The correct answer is 5.

Each frame contains an image composed of an inner circle and an outer pentagon. Each row and column contains (white, gray, and black) inner circles and (white, gray, and black) outer pentagons.

The third row already contains one gray and one black inner circle. Therefore, the inner circle of the answer choice must be white. We can eliminate answer choices 1, 2, and 3.

The third row contains one white and one gray outer pentagon. Therefore, the outer pentagon of the answer choice must be black. We can eliminate answer choice 4 and are left with answer choice 5.

Additionally, notice that the colors of the top-left and bottom-left images switch. The color of the inner circle becomes the color of the outer pentagon and the color of the outer pentagon becomes the color of the inner circle.

This pattern also applies to the top-right and bottom-right corners. The white, outer pentagon will become the color of the inner circle and the inner yellow circle will become the color of the outer pentagon in the answer choice.

Figure Classification and Matrices questions are often challenging, especially under time pressure.

Our complete practice package offers over 100 such questions, providing your child with plenty of opportunities to practice and improve.

Part 2

Question #4 – Verbal Classification

Each question provides three words that are alike in some way. Decide how they are alike, and choose the word that belongs in the same group as the first three words.

parallel     diagonal     horizontal

A. perpendicular
B. symmetry
C. lines
D. geometry
E. math

The correct answer is perpendicular.

Parallel, diagonal, horizontal, and perpendicular are all types of lines. These words are paired because of their relationship to geometry and math.

Symmetry is a relationship between shapes, so it does not pair with the other words. The first three words do align with geometry and math, but these are more topics, rather than specific types of lines.

Question #5 – Verbal Analogies

The first pair of words go together in a certain way. Choose the word that goes together with the third word similarly.

interrogate → question : declare →

A. speak
B. yell
C. command
D. state
E. people

The correct answer is state.

If someone interrogates someone, they question them. If someone declares something, they state it. In this case, the first verb is clarified or better explained by the second verb.

Question #6 – Verbal Analogies

psychiatrist → mind : radiologist →

A. humans
B. study
C. medicine
D. bones
E. science

The correct answer is bones.

A psychiatrist studies the mind. A radiologist studies the bones. In this case, the specialist (the first word) works with the part of the body (the second word).

Question #7 – Number Analogies

Each question provides two pairs of numbers with a certain mathematical connection and another number that shares that connection with one of the answer choices. Find the missing number for the third pair.

[6 → 17]    [8 → 25]    [12 → ?]

A. 19
B. 23
C. 29
D. 35
E. 41

The correct answer is 41.

Look for the pattern in the first series of numbers. We get from 6 to 17 by multiplying by 4 and then, subtracting by 7 (×4 – 7). Indeed, 6 × 4 = 24 – 7 = 17.

Likewise, we get from 8 to 25 by multiplying by 4 and then, subtracting by 7 (×4 – 7). Indeed, 8 × 4 = 32 – 7 = 25.

The next series of numbers should follow the same pattern, meaning that the rule between 12 and ? should be (×4 – 7) as well: 12 × 4 – 7 = 41, meaning that the correct answer will be 41.

Many students find Number Analogies questions tricky and confusing.

The best way to tackle this challenge is through practice. The more your child practices, the quicker they’ll recognize patterns and solve these questions accurately.

Part 3

Question #8 – Number Series

Each question provides a series of numbers with a rule. Use the rule to determine which number will come next in the series.

4     3     4     4     4     5     4     6     4     ?

A. 10
B. 8
C. 7
D. -9
E. -6

The correct answer is 7.

In the series, the numbers at odd positions remain the same and the numbers at even positions increase by 1 while moving toward the right.

The sequence is 4, 3, 4, 3+1=4, 4, 4+1=5, 4, 5+1=6, 4, 6+1=7.

Question #9 – Figure Analysis

Each question shows a paper folded several times and then punched with holes. The answer choices contain unfolded papers with punched-in holes. You need to determine which of the answer choices is the final product of the unfolded punched-in paper.

The correct answer is 4.

A4 paper is folded from its top and bottom and a hole is punched into its center. The center and top and bottom sides of the paper will be cut.

When the paper is unfolded, it will have a circular cut in its middle and two half-circle cuts at its top and bottom.

Question #10 – Figure Recognition

Choose the answer choice that contains the given shape. The shape must keep its size and orientation.

The correct answer is 1.

The shape is visible on the right side of option 1.
