How Difficult is the P&G Digit Challenge Assessment?

Two things make the P&G Digit Challenge difficult: adaptivity and tight time limit.

You have only five minutes to solve as many problems correctly as possible. And as the test progresses, it becomes adaptive. Meaning, if you get a question correct, the next one will be harder. 

From what we know, they are adaptive only in one way – If you get a question wrong you will stay on the same difficulty level.

That being said, the adaptivity of the test can help you know that you’re on the right track. Because if you keep getting much more difficult questions, you can conclude that you answered the previous ones correctly.

The Digit Challenge starts easy, and you’ll see basic equations like:

But around level 12, they go up to more complex problems, like:

( _ x _ ) + _ = 244 or ( _ x _ x _ ) – _ = 560.

How Do You Solve the P&G Digit Challenge?

To solve the P&G digit challenge, you first must familiarize yourself with a few instructions:

  • Each digit can be used only once.
  • You can only use digits 1 to 9 (there’s no zero in the calculator).
  • Often there’s more than one correct answer or number combinations and you can use either one.

From our experience, solving at least 30 problems correctly results in a good score, when solving 40+ correctly is excellent.

Digit Challenge Solving Tips

  • The digit 1 can be very useful in questions with multiplication operations. As multiplying by 1 result with the original amount, you can use this digit to render one of the variables redundant.
  • Pay attention to multiplication, which has precedence over addition and subtraction.
  • In questions that have multiplication, remember that a predefined result ending with 5 or 0 is the product of the number 5.
  • Try to estimate the digit that is appropriate for the equation, such as higher digits for higher predefined results.
  • A number whose sum of digits is divisible by 3 is also divided by 3.
  • In an equation that has only multiplications, try to break down the result into prime factors. For example, the prime factors of 15 are 3 and 5 (because 3×5=15, and 3 and 5 are prime numbers).
  • If you don’t remember the multiplication table by heart or want to play it safe, print out a copy of that and place it near you.
  • If you’re making calculations on scratch paper, always remember to avoid using the zero digit as it doesn’t appear on the test.
